Temperatures could top 100 degrees in the Folsom foothills from Saturday through Monday, and the National Weather Service (NWS) wants residents prepared.
NWS Sacramento issued a Heat Advisory on Thursday, Oct. 1, covering the Sacramento Valley, the Delta, the northern San Joaquin Valley and adjacent foothills, including western El Dorado County. The advisory takes effect at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, and runs through 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5.
Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park all fall within the advisory zone.
The agency projects highs of 94 to 100 degrees across the region, with temperatures expected to peak above 100 in the foothills, according to the Sacramento Bee. Sunday, Oct. 4, and Monday, Oct. 5, are expected to be the hottest days, Rolling Out reported.
NWS Sacramento rates the heat risk as moderate across most of the area, with pockets of major risk in the Sierra foothills. Major risk means danger for anyone without reliable cooling or enough water, not just older adults or people with chronic health conditions, according to Rolling Out's reporting on the advisory.
What to do
NWS Sacramento advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces, avoid direct sun during peak hours and check on neighbors who live alone. Schedule errands and exercise for early morning or evening. Wear lightweight, loose clothing and learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In an emergency, call 911.
Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
Two outdoor Folsom events Saturday
The advisory overlaps with two large outdoor events in Folsom on Saturday, Oct. 3.
The free Folsom Foam & Bubble Party runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Folsom Central and Folsom Faire, according to Heart of Folsom. The event falls squarely within the advisory window.
The third annual Sacramento County Sheriff's Rodeo opens gates at 4 p.m. at the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena, 200 Stafford St., with competition starting at 6 p.m., according to Folsom Times. Attendees may bring a factory-sealed water bottle, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Outside food, beverages, ice chests and stadium chairs are not allowed.
No heat safety precautions from either event organizer appeared in public announcements as of Thursday, Oct. 1.
Cooling centers
The city of Sacramento opened two cooling centers for the advisory period, the Sacramento Bee reported. The Outreach and Engagement Center at 3615 Auburn Blvd. opens Saturday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. and stays open through 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. Walk-ups are accepted and pets are permitted. The North 5th Street Navigation Center at 700 North Fifth St. is open Saturday through Monday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Pets are not permitted there.
No cooling center announcements specific to Folsom, El Dorado Hills or Cameron Park were available as of Thursday, Oct. 1.
The Heat Advisory expires at 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5.
