Folsom-area temperatures will climb into the mid-90s starting Thursday, Oct. 1, with the National Weather Service warning of Moderate HeatRisk through Sunday, Oct. 4.

NWS Sacramento posted Monday, Sept. 28, that above-normal temperatures are expected across the Sacramento Valley, northern San Joaquin Valley and Sierra foothills. That region includes Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park.

The agency's extended forecast for Folsom calls for highs near 94 on Thursday, 95 on Friday and 96 on both Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows will hover around 63 to 64 degrees.

NWS labeled the period a Moderate HeatRisk event, which is Category 2 on the agency's supplemental HeatRisk index. That designation means the heat is expected to affect people sensitive to high temperatures, particularly those without adequate cooling or hydration.

The agency identified young children, infants, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women as especially vulnerable. Older adults living alone or with limited mobility face heightened risk, according to NWS heat safety guidance.

Fire weather conditions precede heat event

The heat arrives on the heels of a separate weather hazard. NWS Sacramento also flagged elevated fire weather conditions running from Monday, Sept. 28, through Thursday morning, Oct. 1, driven by breezy winds and low relative humidity. The strongest winds are expected Tuesday, Sept. 29, and Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The two hazards are sequential.

No formal Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for the Oct. 1–4 period. The Moderate HeatRisk index is a supplementary planning tool, separate from official NWS watches and warnings. NWS Sacramento urged residents to stay hydrated and practice heat safety through the weekend.
