Every golf foursome is spoken for at the El Dorado County Association of Realtors' 27th annual Charity Golf Tournament, set for Sept. 28 at Cameron Park Country Club.
The sold-out field is good news for EDCAR, but the real fundraising has barely started. Golfer registration covers the cost of putting on the tournament. Sponsorships, raffle donations and silent auction items generate the money EDCAR gives away, according to Village Life.
The event typically raises more than $15,000 a year and has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the community over its 27-year history. EDCAR returns more than $100,000 annually through scholarships and charitable programs, according to the organization.
This year's proceeds will go to two veteran-focused groups: American Legion Post 119 and the El Dorado County Veterans Monument Scholarship Program. EDCAR chose the veteran focus to mark America's 250th anniversary, according to EDCAR President Maury O'Hearn.
Post 119, chartered in November 1919 in Placerville, has served El Dorado County veterans and their families for more than a century. The scholarship program awards money to graduating high school seniors who are children of local veterans pursuing higher education. Through the broader Veterans Coalition, the program also supports veteran counseling, hospice care and assistance for homeless veterans.
"Selling out the golf tournament is wonderful, but filling the golf course isn't our ultimate measure of success," O'Hearn said. "The money we are able to give back is."
O'Hearn said the goal is to build on the sold-out momentum and make this one of EDCAR's most successful fundraising years. That takes community help.
Businesses and individuals can still contribute by sponsoring the tournament or donating gift baskets, gift cards, merchandise or experiences for the raffle and silent auction.
Check-in begins at 9 a.m., with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. A limited number of spots remain for a happy hour and dinner that evening at Cameron Park Country Club, open to anyone who wants to attend the raffle and silent auction without playing golf. Details on sponsorships and dinner tickets are available at edcar.org/golf.html.
