Runners in unicorn costumes will loop Cameron Park Lake on Saturday, Sept. 26, raising money so El Dorado County kids can start the school year with new clothes and supplies.
The Unicorn Dash 5K, organized by Gold Rush Active 20/30 Club No. 1034, funds the club's Backpack Shopping Spree. The annual program provides local children with clothing and school supplies, according to Village Life.
"It's just a good way to raise money for the community," club member Angela Findleton said.
The morning starts at 9:30 a.m. with check-in, warm-ups and a vendor stroll at 2989 Cambridge Road. A 1K Mini Dash for younger participants begins at 10 a.m., followed by the 5K at 10:30 a.m. Organizers expect the final runners to cross the finish line by 12:30 p.m., with prizes and awards at 12:40 p.m. or when the last runner finishes.
Costumes are encouraged. Organizers plan to bring a large inflatable unicorn costume, bubbles and grab bags. Vendors and health and wellness booths will line the course.
Tickets cost $25 for adults and $10 for ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and younger get in free with an adult ticket. Findleton said free tickets are also available for families who cannot afford registration.
The event has run for at least five years, though the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted it. Active 20-30 is a national service organization open to adults ages 20 to 39, focused on hands-on projects that benefit children. The Gold Rush club also partners with the men's Active 20/30 chapter on local projects, including serving tacos at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.
Findleton said the club hopes the race will build awareness and attract new members.
