Rep. Tom McClintock won reelection to California's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, Nov. 3, FOX40 reported.
The Republican defeated Democrat Michael Masuda to secure a tenth term representing the district, which includes parts of El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Stanislaus, Madera and Fresno counties.
Early returns reported by The Modesto Focus showed McClintock leading with 55% to Masuda's 45%. The Modesto Focus noted thousands of ballots across Stanislaus County races remained to be counted.
McClintock has served in the U.S. House since 2009 after first winning election in 2008, according to FOX40's pre-election coverage. He avoided a primary challenge this cycle after Rep. Kevin Kiley opted to run in the 6th Congressional District instead, FOX40 reported.
On Capitol Hill, McClintock is a senior member of the House Natural Resources Committee and a member of the House Judiciary Committee. During the campaign, he advocated for fiscal reforms to curb unauthorized spending and balance the budget. He also supports the construction of new reservoirs and the adoption of new land management policies.
Masuda, an engineer and former U.S. Department of State employee, grew up in Amador County. In FOX40's October coverage, Masuda said on his campaign website, "The issues we are facing in District 5 are not 'red or blue,' they are wildfires, affordability, housing, healthcare and jobs."
The 5th Congressional District is one of California's few majority-Republican congressional districts. California has until Dec. 11 to certify election results.
