Three fraud cases totaling an estimated $41,600 in losses appeared on a single day's Folsom Police Department log for Monday, Oct. 5.
The largest loss stemmed from a scam that began Sept. 29, when a victim on the 1500 block of Broadstone Parkway received a text from someone claiming to be "Apple Fraud Support." The victim called the number and purchased $5,000 in gift cards at the suspects' direction. The suspects also gained access to the victim's bank account and withdrew $17,000, according to the log.
The combined loss was $22,000.
A Folsom Boulevard business reported the second case. The business, on the 12700 block, completed six work orders for a client and later determined all six were paid with fraudulent credit card numbers. The estimated loss was $19,000.
In a third incident, someone on the 500 block of Coloma Street was contacted by a caller claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House. The caller told the victim to provide Amazon gift cards to claim a prize. The estimated loss was $600.
Two of the cases were logged as grand theft and one as petty theft. The police log does not indicate whether suspects have been identified or whether investigations are ongoing.
