Southwest wind gusts up to 45 mph will sweep through the Sacramento Valley overnight Friday, Oct. 9, into Saturday, Oct. 10, the National Weather Service Sacramento warned.
The Wind Advisory takes effect at 11 p.m. Friday and runs through 7 a.m. Saturday. The NWS issued the advisory at 9:05 a.m. Friday, covering the Delta, the Interstate 80 corridor, the Carquinez Strait and surrounding valley locations.
Folsom, El Dorado Hills and Cameron Park sit within the broader Sacramento Valley region. The advisory's official text names the Delta and valley locations along and south of Interstate 80 as the primary zone.
Sustained southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 mph. The strongest winds are forecast overnight.
The NWS warned that gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and seasonal decorations, snap tree limbs and cause a few power outages. The agency also urged caution on the road.
"Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles," the advisory states. "Use extra caution."
PG&E activates power shutoffs in multiple counties
The wind event coincides with a broader Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, that Pacific Gas and Electric activated Friday afternoon across parts of California. KCRA reported that shutoffs could expand to 13 counties Friday and Saturday, 17 counties Sunday and eight counties Monday, Oct. 12.
About 12,200 customers statewide could lose power, ABC10 reported. As of Friday before 3 p.m., shutoffs were in effect in parts of Fresno, Kern and Kings counties.
Sacramento and El Dorado counties were not among the counties listed in Friday's PSPS reports. Residents can check whether their address falls in a monitored shutoff area at PG&E's PSPS updates page.
PG&E said it completed customer notifications by text, email and automated phone call on Thursday, Oct. 8. Where shutoffs occur, the utility plans to open Community Resource Centers offering device charging, water, snacks and blankets.
The Wind Advisory expires at 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10.
