Buckeye Union School District's board is set to adopt the district's annual financial report and revised budget at its Wednesday, Sept. 16, meeting in El Dorado Hills.

The five-member Board of Trustees is scheduled to approve the 2025-26 Unaudited Actuals Financial Report and the 2026-27 Revised Budget as a single action item, according to the meeting agenda. The board will also consider Resolution No. 27-04, which would designate certain general funds as committed fund balance.

The financial review comes as the district contends with shrinking enrollment. Assistant Superintendent Jacqueline McHaney reported at the Sept. 2 board meeting that 4,171 students enrolled for the 2026-27 school year, a drop of 56 from the end of the prior year. McHaney cited declining birth rates and housing affordability as factors.

The slide has been steady. District records show enrollment fell from 4,837 in August 2017 to 4,171 in September 2026, a loss of 666 students over nine years.

"Enrollment is still settling at the beginning of the school year," McHaney said at the Sept. 2 meeting.

Fewer students means less state funding. Superintendent David Roth told the board on Sept. 2 that Buckeye Union receives substantially less per-pupil revenue than the statewide average.

Roth said nearly 60 districts representing about 350,000 students have joined the Raise the Base coalition, which advocates for higher base funding under California's Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF).

Beyond the budget, the board will consider Resolution No. 27-02, authorizing teaching credential assignments for 2026-27, and Resolution No. 27-03, recalculating the district's appropriations limit under the Gann Limit. McHaney is presenting all three resolutions.

The consent agenda includes about $12,800 in donations from 22 families and donors directed to Oak Meadow Elementary and Buckeye Union Mandarin Immersion schools. Camerado Springs Middle School student body president Aidyn Kramer and vice president Giacomo Accettura are scheduled to present to the board.

In closed session starting at 6 p.m., the board will discuss Superintendent Roth's 2026-27 evaluation and labor negotiations with the Buckeye Teachers Association, the California School Employees Association and management staff.
