A Sacramento man is in jail on a murder charge after burned remains found in El Dorado County on Oct. 1 were identified as his missing wife.

Gurinder Gill was arrested Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the death of Jasmine Gill, 30, who was last seen at her Sacramento residence on Sept. 30, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said on X. He is being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

The case began when fire crews responded around 7:06 a.m. on Oct. 1 to a report of smoke near Bonetti Road off Mormon Emigrant Trail near Pollock Pines, according to the Mountain Democrat. Employees with a private timber company working nearby had spotted the smoke.

The fire burned about one-tenth of an acre before crews from El Dorado County Fire, Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit, and the U.S. Forest Service extinguished it.

"While putting out the fire (crews) believed they located a deceased person," Sgt. Kyle Parker of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office told the Mountain Democrat at the time.

Those remains were later confirmed to belong to Jasmine Gill, connecting the El Dorado County discovery to a missing-person case in Sacramento County.

Jasmine Gill's cousin reported her missing on Oct. 4, four days after she was last seen. During the initial investigation, Gurinder Gill told detectives that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken his wife into custody while she was checking the mail outside their home, according to the sheriff's office.

Detectives contacted ICE to verify the claim. The agency confirmed no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said detectives identified additional inconsistencies in Gurinder Gill's statements as the investigation continued. Investigators also learned the couple had been involved in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute, KCRA reported, citing the sheriff's office.

Sacramento County homicide detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder Gill on suspicion of murder. They arrested him Oct. 14 and executed search warrants at two residences associated with him, the Folsom Times reported. Authorities did not disclose the locations of those searches or details about evidence recovered.

The sheriff's office has not released additional details about the circumstances of Jasmine Gill's death, including how her remains came to be in El Dorado County.
