Mercy Hospital of Folsom says its AI-enhanced 3D mammography can detect smaller tissue changes and reduce false positives, according to a Folsom Times report published Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Lisa Hausmann, president and CEO of Mercy Hospital of Folsom, said the technology gives radiologists and oncologists sharper tools during a month the hospital is urging residents to schedule screenings.

"This level of technological sophistication means fewer false alarms, faster answers, and … the ability to act decisively when it matters most," Hausmann said in a statement.

The hospital, part of the Dignity Health network, also provides breast cancer surgical and reconstructive care on-site. Through Dignity Health's broader regional system, patients can access precision oncology treatments such as targeted therapies and immunotherapy. The hospital says those treatments attack cancer cells more specifically while limiting damage to healthy tissue.

Support services include nurse navigation programs and genetic counseling.

Screening statistics

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates about 321,910 women and 2,670 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2026. The five-year relative survival rate for localized breast cancer is greater than 99%, according to the ACS. The hospital cited that figure in urging residents not to delay annual mammograms.

Hausmann said the hospital encourages residents to talk with their physicians about personal risk factors and build a screening schedule based on their medical history.
