Earlier today the Yolo County Deputy Coroner identified the shooter as 48 year old Kevin Limbaugh of Davis.
On Thursday night Davis police officer Natalie Corona was processing the scene of a 3 car accident, when witnesses say that Limbaugh was lurking in the shadows and then approached Corona, shooting her once in the neck and then several more times after she went to the ground. He then proceeded to change magazines and fired his gun in the area. He struck a fire truck, the backpack of a woman nearby, a passing bus and a the boot of a fleeing firefighter. There were no other injuries.
Authorities say Limbaugh then returned to a home nearby and went inside to talk to a roommate then went back outside to watch the chaotic scene as first responders flooded the area to help the officer and search for the suspect.
Witnesses told police the suspect left a backpack at the scene. Investigators used that to track down the suspect to the nearby home. At 10 pm Thursday night they arrived at the home. Davis Police Chief Pytel said Limbaugh twice came out of the home while it was surrounded by officers. He was wearing a bulletproof vest. Officers reported hearing a shot inside the home. At 1 am a robot was sent in to search the home and found Limbaugh dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound.
More information came out about the suspect this afternoon. In September Limbaugh was charged with battery involving serious injury. In October he was convicted. He was forced to give up his AR-15 semi automatic rifle in November to Davis police. Limbaugh was not in possession of any other legally acquired guns at the time. Authorities do not how Limbaugh came to possess the guns he used in Thursday night’s shooting. That is still being investigated.
Investigators found a note in Limbaugh’s home. The note said: The Davis Police Department has been hitting me with ultra sonic waves meant to keep dogs from barking. I notified the press, internal affairs and even the FBI about it. I am highly sensitive to its affect in my inner ear. I did my best to appease them, but they have continued for years and I can’t live this way anymore.
