On Thursday night a Davis police officer was shot and killed after responding to a 3 car accident.
The accident took place around 6:45 pm. Davis police officer Natalie Corona was investigating the accident when shots were fired and she was hit. The incident happened near a fire station. First responders were immediately on scene and attempted life saving measures. Corona was transported to UC Davis where she died of her injuries.
Corona who was 22, started with the department in 2016 as a community services officer. According to Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel, Corona completed the police academy in July 2018 and was promoted to police officer. She recently completed the field training program and was on her own for the past 2 weeks.
An intense manhunt ensued after the shooting. The suspect fled the scene on foot. Davis police officers and neighboring agencies surrounded the area and set up a perimeter. At 10 pm a tip was received that the suspect was barricaded in a home near 5th and E streets. At 1 am officers entered the home and found the suspect dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound.
This is the first officer death for the Davis police department since 1959. The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department will be handling the investigation.
At around 3 am, Corona’s body was escorted from UC Davis Medical Center to the Yolo County Coroner’s Office.
